Hello, I'm Paul S. Palmer, Ph.B., Director, of the
Palmer Smoking Clinic and I
have the best kept secret of how to quit smoking.
Have you tried to quit? Tried everything?
I've got some good news for you. The reason you failed might not have been your
fault!
Everything you tried, had one thing in common. Each one was suppose to help your
overcome your addiction to nicotine. Right?
Mystery pills, prescription drugs, herbs, inhalers, the patch, the gum, needles, laser
beams, tapering down, hard candy and tooth picks, were all suppose to help you
get the nicotine monkey off your back. Did they work on your nicotine addiction?
It's hard to tell, since for 25 years the estimates of how long the
nicotine part of smoking would last after you quit were 48 to
72 hours. In other
words, do nothing and in two to three days the nicotine part of smoking is over.
I'll bet you remember hearing that before.
Then why are you so uncomfortable, crawling the walls and suffering withdrawal
symptoms for weeks and months down the line?
The Habit, the behavioral part of
smoking is what stays active.
This behavioral problem is complex with many layers. One layer is the
connections you make over the years between the cigarette and events. Wake up in
the morning and reach for a cigarette, a cup of coffee, have a cocktail and
on and on. Over the years thousands of events become connected to the cigarette.
When the event occurs, it calls you to smoke. It's automatic now. But, you
knew that already!
Then we have the next layer, the trips to the mouth. How often do you bring your hand (and the cigarette) back and forth to the mouth each day?
Estimates range from 200 to 600 trips per day. Wow! Need I say more?
Your mannerisms also account for a another part of your smoking pattern. How you
hold your cigarette, how often you flick your ash are but a few examples
of your unique smoking style.
Any one of the above would be problematic when you are trying to quit
but put them all together and you have the largest habit pattern
(problem) you'll ever acquire. If this habit is active, it will call you to
reach for the cigarette, especially where and when you smoked. If you don't
answer the call your mind and body will feel the effects, these are your
withdrawal symptoms.
Can nicotine substitutes, drugs or laser beams help with your
hugh habit problem? NO! Then, no wonder
you failed!
Is there a program that addresses the behavioral part of smoking? There sure
is and it's the only one that does. Only at the Palmer Smoking Clinic.
